How to convert time to decimal hours
Payroll systems and invoices need hours as a decimal number, but clocks and timesheets show hours and minutes. To convert, divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the whole hours.
Example: You worked 8 hours and 20 minutes. 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33, so your time is 8.33 hours. At $18 per hour that is 8.33 × $18 = $150.
A common mistake is to type 8.20 into a pay calculation. That treats 20 minutes as 0.20 of an hour (12 minutes) and underpays by 8 minutes.
Common payroll conversions
| Time worked | Decimal hours | Time worked | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:15 | 7.25 | 8:15 | 8.25 |
| 7:30 | 7.50 | 8:30 | 8.50 |
| 7:45 | 7.75 | 8:45 | 8.75 |
| 7:20 | 7.33 | 8:40 | 8.67 |
| 7:50 | 7.83 | 9:10 | 9.17 |
Converting decimal hours back to hours and minutes
Keep the whole number as hours. Multiply the part after the decimal point by 60 to get minutes.
Example: 6.4 hours → 6 hours + (0.4 × 60) = 6 hours 24 minutes.
Payroll rounding: quarter hour and tenth of an hour
Many US employers round clock times. The two most common methods are:
- Nearest 15 minutes (the “7-minute rule”): 1–7 minutes round down, 8–14 minutes round up. 8:07 becomes 8:00 (8.00 hours); 8:08 becomes 8:15 (8.25 hours).
- Nearest 6 minutes (1/10 hour): time is rounded to tenths of an hour, so 6 minutes = 0.1 hours. Common in legal and professional billing.
Federal rules generally allow rounding to the nearest quarter hour only if, over time, it doesn't consistently underpay employees. Some states have stricter rules. Check with your employer or your state labor department if you're unsure.

How to convert time to decimal in Excel or Google Sheets
Excel stores time as a fraction of a day, so 12:00 is 0.5. To get decimal hours, multiply by 24.
| Goal | Formula (time in cell A2) |
|---|---|
| Time to decimal hours | =A2*24 |
| Time to decimal minutes | =A2*1440 |
| Rounded to 2 decimals | =ROUND(A2*24,2) |
| Decimal hours back to time | =A2/24 (format as [h]:mm) |
Format the result cell as Number, not Time, or Excel will show it as a clock time. The same formulas work in Google Sheets. See the full Excel guide for timesheet totals, times over 24 hours and common errors.
